The author points out a direct connection between a so-called metacognitive knowledge and quality of texts that pupils produce during the school years. The study presents possibilities for diagnostics within the area of metacognitive knowledge that plays an important role in the development of text competence of pupils as well as on evaluation of written essays of pupils attending elementary schools.
