Private tutoring is defined as teaching regular school subjects for a fee beyond formal education. The aim of the study is to describe the state of private tutoring, its forms, extent and intensity during school attendance. The key question is the typology of the pupil requesting private tutoring and the factors influencing the use of private tutoring, especially school success, preparation for entrance examinations, socio-economic status and cultural capital of the family. A survey sample for the quantitative questionnaire survey consisted of 1,016 pupils in the 9th grade of primary schools in the Central Bohemian and Ústí nad Labem Regions. The results of the research confirmed a high rate of the use of paid tutoring, with respect to individual and preparatory courses, during the lower secondary level school attendance in both regions.
